Washington State Residence

The Washington State Residence is an example of MTR’s commitment to excellence and attention to detail. The 1914 Mediterranean style house was originally surrounded by 14 acres of gardens designed and built by the Olmsted Brothers. MTR's design preserves elements of the original landscape that had survived while accommodating the client’s twenty-first century needs. The owners often host events, so it was important to allow guests and family to circulate without conflict. The design reflects the owners’ interest in classical art, provides multiple spaces for outdoor entertainment, and capitalizes on views to Puget Sound. Gatherings are often held in the Japanese strolling garden with its pond, stonework and traditional wood and bamboo structures. The family enjoys private terraces, a woodland pond and shade garden, and a swimming pool.
